Bridging the gap between research and real-world application is key to driving meaningful change. By transforming scientific findings into evidence-based knowledge, services, and products, valuable insights become accessible, actionable, and impactful for the intended target groups. The following projects and activities demonstrate this approach in action.
Documentary and Game

The Water Will Takes Us Documentary explores how limited knowledge, human perception, and policy gaps turn floods into catastrophes. By presenting diverse perspectives, the documentary reveals the multi-faceted and complex nature of flooding. It highlights the need for a shift—from resisting nature to understanding it—as a path toward sustainable solutions. The documentary has been screened at various universities and environmental documentary festivals, fostering discussions on flood resilience and adaptation.

Kan River Flood Documentary captures the severe flooding in the villages of Keshar and Sangan near Tehran through eyewitness reports, exploring their experiences, challenges, and responses. Produced by ENRoot for the HoWaMan Project, it serves as an educational resource to raise awareness about flood risk adaptation. The film is part of the HoWaMan capacity-building portal, aiming to inform and engage the public on the importance of proactive flood risk management.

Gamification enhances knowledge transfer through quizzes, mini-games, and storytelling, making learning more accessible and actionable. The Gamification Concept of the research project Streaming Tears of the Middle East applies this approach to Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) and Transboundary Water Management for Clean Tigris Platform, a project by Elbarlemant GmbH.
Workshop and Training

Introduction to Integrated Water Resource Management workshop series uses interactive methods—exercises, simulation games, role plays, and discussions—to introduce the IWRM concept, its significance, critiques, and key skills for stakeholder collaboration in the water sector. This workshop, held in Erbil, Iraq, is part of the “New Water Leaders for Iraq” project, funded by ifa and the German Federal Foreign Office, and implemented by elbarlament GmbH.

Women’s Empowerment for Integrated Water Resources Management workshop series uses interactive methods to introduce the IWRM concept, its significance, critiques, and key skills to empower women in stakeholder collaboration in the water sector. As part of the “Women Leading the Water Sector in Duhok” project, this workshop series focuses on gender-sensitive IWRM in Iraq, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to drive inclusive water management.

Diving into Uncertainty: Climate Adaptation in the Mangroves of Guayas workshop brought together experts and local communities in Guayaquil, Ecuador, to discuss the role of local knowledge, socio-economic factors, and culture in decision-making. Using a game-based learning approach, it facilitated the transfer of research findings from the CELICE Research Project, coordinated by TH Köln and ESPOL, into practice.

Context Matters: Navigating Decision-Making in Flood Risk Management workshop explores how cultural and social contexts shape decisions in flood risk management. Through a serious game format, participants step into the role of decision-makers, navigating real-world environmental challenges. They make decisions under constraints, while receiving key insights into the social and cultural dynamics of affected regions.

Entrepreneurship, Idiation and Social Innovation Workshop Series guides participants through the journey from ideation to business development in natural resources management, fostering innovation and sustainable solutions. The workshop is offered as both short-term workshop sessions and educational curricula.

Expert Knowledge Transfer enables experts to turn their knowledge and experience into engaging, interactive learning formats tailored for specific audiences. ENRoot ensures that complex tools and concepts are available, understandable and applicable. ENRoot has supported various workshops including Spatial Analysis for Young Water Professionals, Evidence-based Proposal Writing for Research Projects, and Water Security and SDG Assessment.
Research
Best Practices in Climate and Environmental Initiatives examines successful models of climate change and environmental bodies worldwide, identifying key strategies and lessons learned. The findings support the feasibility assessment for establishing an Iraqi Climate and Environment Institute, conducted as part of the “Iraq Thinks Ahead” project, funded by GIZ and implemented by elbarlament e.V..
Streaming Tears of the Middle East examines how lessons from the Rhine basin can inspire customized solutions for water management challenges in the Euphrates and Tigris basin. This research contributes to the “Clean Tigris – Dialogue Programme for Sustainable Peace in Mesopotamia” project, coordinated by elbarlament GmbH.
Enabling Environment for Effective Flood Risk Management: The Case of 2019 Flooding in Lorestan, Iran examines the challenges faced by authorities and communities during the 2019 floods in Dorood and Pol-e Dokhtar. It proposes a framework that integrates social, cultural, and governance aspects into FRM planning, with a focus on trust-building and community engagement.
